The Health Profession Education Unit (HPEU)

 

 

Preamble: The Health Profession Education Unit (HPEU) is constituted with an ultimate aim to create student centric and patient centric environment. To this effect the HPEU strives to empower the academic leaders at FDS to adopt evidence based instructional and assessment methods that fosters ‘Thinking Graduates’ the future work force for catering national and global oral health care needs. The unit recognizes the need for continuously monitoring the need for curricular reforms and planning faculty development programmes by prioritizing goals with available resources, through surveying new instructional technologies and assessment methods to meet the learning needs. The academic leaders are assisted in faculty collaboration through enhanced communication and networking activities. The unit also recognizes the need for timely rewarding the Academic Leaders for best performance and thus participates in identifying faculty for Teaching, Research and Service Awards.

Vision statement: Empowering academic leaders at FDS to enhance quality education and contribute to graduate success, promote patient safety while making FDS a conducive place to work, live and learn.

 

Objectives:

  1. Lead identification of competencies relevant to the program, curriculum development, implementation and evaluation

  2. Empower teachers to adapt and adopt appropriate and best instructional and assessment methods to comply with curricular requirements

  3. Assist in accreditation requirements at national and international level

  4. Assist in establishing collaborations with international  dental schools for adopting best practices in curriculum and educational research

  5. Contribute in creating encouraging atmosphere working in collaboration with all faculty for teaching, learning and patient service

  6. Developing evidence and dissemination of educational research findings

 

Activities:

  1. Student induction programmes

  2. New faculty orientation to the institution’s instructional technology resources

  1. Induction and training programmes for admin and supporting staff

  2. Planning and delivery of FDP on instructional  and assessment methods

  3. Planning and delivery of courses in the domain of hidden curriculum

  4. Develop supporting staff for contributing in effective instruction and assessment

  5. Strengthening Mentorship programme

  6. Faculty Development Programmes (FDP) for external faculty

  7. Consultation services on new instructional strategies

  8.  Actively seek and encourage younger faculty to initiate educational reform in an organized, evidenced based scientific manner

  9.  Assist in developing scholarship

  10.  Develop programme evaluation plan and initiate remedial action if any

  11.  Updating the knowledge and skills related HPE

The membership is open to any faculty interested in Health Profession Education and wishes to enhance the service component of the portfolio.

 

Activity 1: Student induction programmes

Curriculum, academic process, organizational structure of FDS, mentorship programme, policies and processes for undergraduate and postgraduate students

 

 

Activity 2: New faculty orientation to the institution’s instructional technology resources

Introduction to University, FDS and curriculum at FDS (policies and procedures)

 

Activity 3 and 6

Induction and training programmes for admin and supporting staff

Introduction to University, FDS and job specific training as per rules of FDS (professionalism, Integrity, Uniform policy etc.)

 

Activity 4 Planning and delivery of FDP on instructional  and assessment methods

Student engagement techniques, WPBA, Higher order thinking skills, e learning etc.)

 

Activity 5: Planning and delivery of courses in the domain of hidden curriculum (soft skills)

communication skills, professionalism, patient safety etc.

 

Activity 7: Strengthening Mentorship Programme

  • Advise students of programme requirements, policies and procedures.

  • Monitor academic progress.

  • Provide counseling and guidance in situations that may affect academic performance.

  • Assist students with preparing a plan of action to correct academic or professional deficiencies.

  • Discuss and assist with building curriculum vitae

  • To develop mentorship manual and log books

 

Activity 8: Programmes for external faculty

Offering workshops at least 3 per year and plan to offer certificate programmes

 

Activity 10: Consultation services on new instructional strategies

Internal, within University and External to University

 

Activity 11: Planning of educational research

Documenting evidence of all the interventions and dissemination of the experience and findings in HPE journals and platforms

 

Activity 12: Journal Club

Once a month activity to keep abreast with latest developments in the field of medical education
